The purpose of this University Seminar is to establish an academic writing community for women at GWU. This writing community will support academic/scholarly writing for women of all disciplines and career stages at GWU. Many if not most academics struggle with writing, but a substantial body of research shows that women are more affected by barriers to academic productivity than their male counterparts (cf Flaherty, 2020; Jensen, 2017). Recent demographic reports indicate that men continue to out-earn women in academia, and that the standards for research productivity over teaching and service favor men over women (Catalyst, 2020).
This problem has been exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic (Flaherty, 2020; Minelli, 2020). Given the prognosis of the Covid-19 pandemic and the current absence of a vaccine, women are likely to continue to struggle disproportionately with academic writing and publishing over the coming year. One support that would improve the lives of academic women at GWU is to establish a writing community specifically for women faculty members.
